Is it just me, or are there a lot of things to be thankful for these days?
Along with public education (such as it is), voting rights (such as they are), the endangered species act, the earned income tax credit, community health centers, NC’s excellent voter-verified paper ballot legislation, Plan B emergency contraception and Jon Stewart, you can add FESTIVUS to the list of things you’re thankful for. Oh, and the promise of a new direction for the country!
Yes, that’s right: it’s time for Traction’s 2nd Annual Festivus for the Left of Us! holiday-ish fundraiser with silent auction. Food, drink, and feats of strength! Shopping, cool people and a great cause! Plus fabulous games, dancing, airings of grievances, even get your new year’s fortune told…
Sat, Dec 9th, starting at 5pm, at Broad St. Cafe in Durham. Silent auction ends at 7pm, in time to get to other holiday parties (if you must). Write to festivus@getTraction.org to volunteer, donate items, or RSVP.
But back to you…
What are YOU thankful for this year? Post it in the comments!

Yes, there is a lot to be thankful for these days. I’m thankful for new leadership in the House and Senate! I’m thankful for California and Oregon defeating another attempt at legislating parental notification for teens abortions, and for South Dakota saying NO to restricting reproductive rights. YEAH!!!!

Apart from the obvious improvement in our nation’s political situation after the recent elections, I’m going to step away from the political and express how thankful I am that this year, my 76 year old mother beat cancer for the second time. During a month in the hospital in early spring, things looked bleak, but with the aid of outstanding care, the Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma was knocked out over the summer. Friends and family are the best things to be thankful for, and in a year of stress, good news is DEFINITELY welcome!

Not to be too cheesy, but I am thankful for all the friends that make up my NC family!

I’m so thankful for healthy children, and for the health professionals that help children get healthy. I’m thankful for the Carrboro Farmers Market. I’m thankful for Latin music. Today, I’m thankful for indoor heating.
And… I’m thankful that Michael Richards may be freeing us from the cultural hegemony of Seinfeld. I never did like that show.

I am thankful for Lanya and Traction because it is such a strong testament to the talent and passions of our future leaders. And, I am thankful that traction has had such a strong year. And I am thankful that Lanya will finally get paid! And my family is rather cool too.

On the personal side, I’m so thankful that this year I’ve taken pro-active steps for positive change in my life. I have a new dissertation topic, great collaborators, and physical therapy. I’m thankful for a (generally) sound body that takes me dancing. I’m thankful for the amazing and wonderful people close to me — including a couple of awesome men who are super dancing follows (and leads!) and all my friends who support my carless lifestyle with the occasional ride.
I’m also thankful for the HPV vaccine, more and more climate activists taking charge of global warming when our government won’t act, Judge Jones’ phenomenal opinion in favor of real science in the Dover intelligent design case, the recent minimum wage increases around the country, and the 2 million more young voters (as opposed to 2002) who showed their stuff this election.
